MiPsummer School on Mitochondrial Respiratory Physiology

MiPsummer 2008 - Topics

Considering the dynamic structure of mitochondria in living cells, it is quite appropriate to develop the programme of MiPsummer 2008 in terms of a dynamic interplay between suggestions by the lecturers and tutors, and interests expressed by all participants. The MiPsummer2008 Program is emerging with the following Topics of Lectures (morning sessions) and Focus Groups (afternoons, some evenings):
  • Respiratory control in isolated mitochondria and permeabilized cells and fibers.
  • Substrates used in mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation studies and the Q-junction approach.
  • On respiratory control ratios and uncoupling.
  • Mitochondrial and apoptisis: signaling and respiratory function.
  • Mitochondria in signaling pathways: Mechanisms on NO and ROS.
  • Ischemia and reperfusion in the rat heart. Does the mitochondrial damage occur during ischemia?
  • Humans - The effect of developmental age on human skeletal muscle mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation.
  • Mitochondria, genetics, and obesity in mice - an early project.
  • Isolated mitochondria, permeabilized cells and fibers, or intact cells: Which model is 'best'?
  • Respiration in permeabilized heart fibers versus two populations of isolated mitochondria in the aged rat heart.
  • Permeabiliized muscle fiber and isolated mitochondrial respiration in human skeletal muscle biopsies.
  • Mitochondrial membrane potential: why and how to measure?
  • The TPP+ electrode for measuring mitochondrial membrane potential.
  • Oxygen kinetics and nitric oxide.
  • Resting respiration in 'State 4' – the LEAK state.
  • Metabolism and acid production - aerobic and anaerobic flux.
  • Mitochondrial targeting of protein import.
  • The mitochondrial defect in the aged rat heart and the impact on the increased damage following ischemia in the elderly rats heart - a cardiolipin story.
  • The mitochondrial defect in heart failure in dogs: A story of abnormal oxidative phosphorylation, but with normal ETC complex activities. The answer is in respirasomes or supercomplexes.
  • Liver mitochondrial defects in the aged rat.
  • ...

We ask all speakers and tutors for focus groups, to send us a short list of questions, which will provide for students a guideline on the level of the presentations(balance between introductory and advanced). Posters (or simply 'projects') will be presented (10+5 min or 5+5 min) by participants who submit their abstracts and are selected for presentations.
