- Development of a sport module: high altitude sprint training
Abstract
- Recently, new high altitude training concepts for team sport athletes have emerged that combine living and repeated sprinting at altitude to improve sea-level performance. Such a training modality might be important not only for team sport athletes but for endurance athletes in general. A sport module has to be effective, time efficient and economically attractive. As a basis we will investigate if βlive high train low, interspersed with repeated sprints in hypoxia (LHTLH)β for one week improves repeated-sprint ability (RSA), Yo-Yo intermittent recovery level 2 test (YYIR2) performance and submaximal and maximal cardiorespiratory and metabolic exercise parameters to a greater extent than conventional βlive high train low (LHTL)βand βlive low train low (LLTL)β combined with repeated sprint training (similar as performed at altitude, named LLTLS). Mechanisms potentially responsible for such improvements (mitochondrial function, oxidative stress) will be elucidated. In the training setting of the HLZ, 2 soccer teams (approx. 20 players each) of similar experience will be recruited. During two consecutive years, one team will perform a LHTHH training camp (live high train high with repeated sprints in hypoxia) and a LHTL or LHTH training camp, whereas the other team will perform a LLTLS training camp. The team that performs the altitude training camps will live in KΓΌhtai (~2000 m) and alternate between training in KΓΌhtai and Axams (~870 m, in close reach) for one week. The team that performs a low altitude camp will live and train in Mieming (~860 m, Tirol/Austria). The training will be similar under all conditions and will be arranged in accordance to the coachesβ intentions (i.e., regular pre-season training program). The LLTLS and the LHTHH training camp will additionally include 3-4 sessions of specific repeated sprint training as adopted by Gatterer et al (2014). The sprint training will be performed at altitude in the LHTHH group and at low altitude in the LLTLS group.
