The best known experience of an electrostatic discharge (ESD) is feeling a spark when touching some object or another person. ESD is the sudden and momentary electric current that flows between two objects at different electrical potentials. Such a potential difference may commonly build up by

General electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection procedures (most important: touching the oxygraph housing before touching any sensitive part) should be observed when handling any kind of electronic equipment, including the OROBOROS Oxygraph-2k.
ย
Attention: This only works when the Oxygraph-2k is connected to the mains power supply. If the mains cable of the oxygraph is unplugged other grounded objects have to be found for touching (e.g. heating, water pipes).

Procedures that may be susceptible to damage components by ESD are especially:
ย
ย
ย
ย
* Handling the POS connector with removed POS and / or when unplugged form the main unit.
ย
* Handling the pX channel: There are two situations when a ESD caused by the operators body could reach the electronics of the oxygraph while working with the pX channel:
ย
** Directly by touching the BNC port during plugging in or out an electrode.
ย
** Theoretically an electrical contact is also possible by touching the needles of the TIP syringes when any potentiometric sensor (TPP, pH, Ca,..) is in the chamber filled with medium (medium = electrolyte).
ย
ย
ย
ย
In these situations extra care should be taken to strictly follow the guidelines to prevent damage to the electronics (MiPNet14.01).
