::::* '''Project extension request''' - open letter to the COST officials in Brussles (2021-02-08):

:::::: Dear representatives of the COST Association:
:::::: '''Academic institutions have been and are under stress since March 2020.''' Particularly collaborative projects have been put on hold due to COVID19 restrictions. Priorities have changed. This has prevented further progress in CA15203 and prevents completion of our promising plans, if the Grant Period of this Action cannot be extended to '''resume and finalize our collaborative activities after the lockdown''' persisting in many countries. This would entail a highly efficient use of the remaining CA15203 grant money and reduce the damage caused by the pandemic.

Dear COST Action Participants,
:::::: Initial collaborations in the MitoEAGLE Action have been published very successfully, particularly:
:::::: > Gnaiger E et al ― '''MitoEAGLE Task Group (2020) Mitochondrial physiology.''' Bioenerg Commun 2020.1. [[BEC 2020.1 doi10.26124bec2020-0001.v1|doi:10.26124/bec:2020-0001.v1]] – '''666 coauthors,''' 44 pages.

We would like to welcome you to MITOEAGLE. We are overwhelmed by the numerous responses (46 groups) and the great interest in this COST Action, which encourages us in our ambitions.
:::::: But several ongoing tasks have been interrupted, and significant efforts would be wasted without the option to use the budget for finalizing the experimental collaborations (in workshops and STSMs) and corresponding manuscripts in preparation. Only an extension of the period for using the GP5 budget beyond the pandemic restrictions can ensure that the MitoEAGLE Action will be brought to a successful end, instead of '''phasing out with mere frustration''' in the most productive period.

For up-to-date information on participants and Working Groups, please check the following links:
:::::: We are contacting you as a follow-up to our request for an extension beyond Feb 2021. After the realization that an on-site meeting will not be possible in Jan/Feb 2021, we intended to switch to an virtual meeting. But, at this point it is not efficient to organize the MitoEAGLE Summit, since planned experiments needed for the finalization of manuscripts had to be postponed. Hence, after the successful meeting in Belgrade in Oct 2019 ([https://www.mitoeagle.org/index.php/MiP2019/MitoEAGLE_Belgrade_RS https://www.mitoeagle.org/index.php/MiP2019/MitoEAGLE_Belgrade_RS] ) little progress would be presented at an online event by Feb 2021. Attendance would be minimal, with many frustrated faces.

At a first glance, the four Working Groups (WGs) seem to be appropriate for the consortium. Feel free to update or change your selection of the WGs you will join, particularly when the WGs will be elaborated more precisely. Please note that we have changed the focus from “human and mouse models” to “human and rodent models”. Furthermore, we would like to ask you, whether you consider the specific focus on gender to be appropriate or if we should keep a general balance for all EAGLE topics (Evolution - Age - Gender - Lifestyle – Environment)?
:::::: This is why we urgently request a significant extension of the Grant Period 5 of CA15203 MitoEAGLE, without any change in the budget. '''Important initiatives of the EU try to reduce the damage caused by the pandemic at great cost. An unbureaucratic extension of our COST Action would prevent a lot of damage at no additional cost.'''

In order to participate in a COST Action, participants will need to register in the COST electronic database, e-COST, with affiliation profile and CV. Multiple participants may register for each institution. Registration is very simple and straightforward and can be found on:
:::::: Our more than 900 project members ([https://www.mitoeagle.org/index.php/MitoEAGLE_network https://www.mitoeagle.org/index.php/MitoEAGLE_network]) would appreciate a positive and immediate decision by the COST Association.
: » https://e-services.cost.eu/?module=user&action=loginForm&userParam%5BrequestedURI%5D=%2F

We would like to ask you to forward us the name of your groups' main contact person (first name, last name) and the corresponding e-mail used in the e-COST registration within the next week. ‘Proposers’ will then be invited among the main contact persons through the e-COST submission tool. ‘Proposers’ have to finally accept the invitation by following the link in the invitation e-mail.
:::::: With kind regards,

:::::: Erich Gnaiger, Ph.D.
Sandra will manage these further steps in our COST Action application.

Best regards,

:::::: Dear Erich,

'''WG1.    MITOEAGLE data base on gender and mt-function in health and disease'''
:::::: I regret to inform you that since CA15203 already benefitted from an extension, an additional prolongation of the Action is not possible despite the impact the pandemic is having on our societies. The reason is that per the COST Association rules, COST Actions can be extended for a maximum of 6 months (COST Action Management, Monitoring and Final Assessment (COST 134/14; [http://www.cost.eu/action_management http://www.cost.eu/action_management])).
:* Mainly published data from WG participants will be cataloged in the detail beyond the published record (anonymised data on individuals in addition to group averages; tabulated results in addition to figures; conversion to common SI units; comparability of normalization).
:* Data management systems - diversity vs. unification to manage the MITOEAGLE biometrics database.
:* Measures of mitochondrial respiratory function in human and rodent tissues, blood cells and cell lines will be structured according to the EAGLE background, with specific emphasis on gender-specific mt-function and gender medicine; joint publication.

'''WG2.    Challenges on quality control for reference data in mitochondrial physiology'''
:::::: Kind regards,
:* Basic concepts and communication: Consolidation of concepts and nomenclature on mitochondrial respiratory states and control parameters; [[MitoPedia]]; joint publication.
:::::: Federica
:* Laboratory standards: Protocols, technologies and standard procedures; data base on laboratory protocols.
:::::: Dr Federica Ortelli | Science Officer
:* Reference data in mitochondrial physiology: Quality control, documentation, bioinformatics standards.
:::::: COST Association | Avenue du Boulevard - Bolwerklaan 21,

'''WG3.    Inter-laboratory test and outreach'''
::::* '''COVID-19 measures''' - open letter to the COST officials in Brussles (2020-09-03):
:* An inter-laboratory ring test will be introduced in practice as a world-wide innovation in the field of mitochondrial respiratory physiology: design and implementation; reference sample dissemination; test protocol(s); data analysis; joint publication.
:* Comparison of results between and within instrumental platforms.
:* Logistics for extended future collaboration in Europe, North and South America, Asia, Australia and Africa.

'''WG4.    Training and data sharing'''
:::::: Since the lockdown we contacted the COST Officials with several suggestions to adapt our MitoEAGLE initiatives to the travel restrictions in order to reach our final goals (MoU). Invariably the answer was a bureaucratic “NO” without even attempting on any flexibility in the face of the COVID-19 crisis.
:* Recommendations for quality control, data reporting and data sharing beyond the published record.
:* Concepts on Open Access and institutionalized service for data management, data mining and health-care conforming standards of data interpretation.
:* Summary on strategic dissemination and education programme for MitoGlobal EAGLE.

::::::  We are embarrassed by the fact that the COST Action lacks any innovation potential to be responsive to the present challenges and support alternative strategies other than costs for large virtual meetings. In our attempt to organize the final MitoEAGLE Summit and MC Meeting with satellite Training School, we consider health safety first. PCR-testing as one of several safety precautions in the context of our meeting with a significantly reduced number of participants should be supported by COST, if we want to organize a scientific meeting at the highest level of quality control. We should set positive examples for organizers of other (including non-scientific) events. Why does COST deny to support us in these aims — within the approved budget?

MitoEAGLE today

  • Project extension request - open letter to the COST officials in Brussles (2021-02-08):
Dear representatives of the COST Association:
Academic institutions have been and are under stress since March 2020. Particularly collaborative projects have been put on hold due to COVID19 restrictions. Priorities have changed. This has prevented further progress in CA15203 and prevents completion of our promising plans, if the Grant Period of this Action cannot be extended to resume and finalize our collaborative activities after the lockdown persisting in many countries. This would entail a highly efficient use of the remaining CA15203 grant money and reduce the damage caused by the pandemic.
Initial collaborations in the MitoEAGLE Action have been published very successfully, particularly:
> Gnaiger E et al ― MitoEAGLE Task Group (2020) Mitochondrial physiology. Bioenerg Commun 2020.1. doi:10.26124/bec:2020-0001.v1666 coauthors, 44 pages.
But several ongoing tasks have been interrupted, and significant efforts would be wasted without the option to use the budget for finalizing the experimental collaborations (in workshops and STSMs) and corresponding manuscripts in preparation. Only an extension of the period for using the GP5 budget beyond the pandemic restrictions can ensure that the MitoEAGLE Action will be brought to a successful end, instead of phasing out with mere frustration in the most productive period.
We are contacting you as a follow-up to our request for an extension beyond Feb 2021. After the realization that an on-site meeting will not be possible in Jan/Feb 2021, we intended to switch to an virtual meeting. But, at this point it is not efficient to organize the MitoEAGLE Summit, since planned experiments needed for the finalization of manuscripts had to be postponed. Hence, after the successful meeting in Belgrade in Oct 2019 (https://www.mitoeagle.org/index.php/MiP2019/MitoEAGLE_Belgrade_RS ) little progress would be presented at an online event by Feb 2021. Attendance would be minimal, with many frustrated faces.
This is why we urgently request a significant extension of the Grant Period 5 of CA15203 MitoEAGLE, without any change in the budget. Important initiatives of the EU try to reduce the damage caused by the pandemic at great cost. An unbureaucratic extension of our COST Action would prevent a lot of damage at no additional cost.
Our more than 900 project members (https://www.mitoeagle.org/index.php/MitoEAGLE_network) would appreciate a positive and immediate decision by the COST Association.
With kind regards,
Erich Gnaiger, Ph.D.
