MitoGlobal implementation

We would like to ask mitochondrial societies to discuss the MitoGlobal proposal at their general meetings, and to provide your input and critical assessment for the joint improvement of the MitoGlobal proposal. Your feedback will be summarized here. You can enter your feedback directly, and add to the discussion.

Structure

  • Executive committee: The Executive Committee covers the general aims of MitoGlobal.
Chairpersons and their representatives of societies for mitochondrial research and medicine organizations.
  • Steering committees: Steering Committees are formed for the completion of special projects. These projects can be proposed to a member of the Executive Committee. A project will then be presented by a member of the Executive Committee, and afterwards, a decision on the project will be taken by a majority vote of the Executive Committee. Participants are nominated by the Executive Committee.

Financial basis

If the concept of MitoGlobal is supported by a critical number of mitochondrial organizations, a concept must then be developed to generate a financial basis. A MitoGlobal budget requires the founding of a legal society. The following sources might be considered:

  • Small annual membership fee paid by the participating mitochondrial organizations.
  • Small annual membership fee paid by participating mitochondrial centres of excellence.
  • Small fee for inclusion of a scientific conference in the MitoGlobal calendar (voluntary).
  • Annual fee by supporting companies, listed as associated members.

References and notes

  1. The discussion on MitoGlobal was initiated by --Erich Gnaiger at the occasion of the 8th Conference of Asian Society for Mitochondrial Research and Medicine (ASMRM), and 11th Conference of Japanese Society of Mitochondrial Research and Medicine (J-mit), Kagoshima, Japan. Some time was given to the discussion of MitoGlobal at the 8th Conference on Mitochondria Physiology, MiP2011, Bordeaux, France and at the 1st Annual Conference of the Society for Mitochondrial Research and Medicine - India (1st SMRM). At Bioblast 2012, Keith Garlid suggested to switch from 'Global Mitochondrial Network' to 'Mitochondrial Global Network'.

Development of MitoGlobal

Scientists discuss MitoGlobal at Bioblast 2012, Innsbruck AT (Dec 2012)

Bioblast 2012, 10.-12. 12. 2012, Innsbruck, Austria: A specific session was devoted to Mitochondrial Global Network - next steps.

National mt-organizations joined MitoGlobal at the 9th ASMRM and 5th Chinese-Mit Conference, Beijing CN (Nov 2012)

MitoGlobal was discussed at MiPsummer and FEBS Workshop, Cambridge UK (Jul 2012)

The executive MiPboard held a meeting in Cambridge during MiPsummer School 2012 and FEBS Workshop. The agenda included the topic of the Mitochondrial Global Network (MitoGlobal).

Erich Gnaiger reported on the developments since Kagoshima 2011. A comprehensive list of mitochondrial organizations is not yet available (for a possible format see list of MitoGlobal Organizations), but is required to ensure that a wide and general international network will be involved in formally establishing MitoGlobal. Such a list has to extend beyond links provided by various societies (e.g. MiPlinks). Secretarial assistance will be made available in the group of Erich Gnaiger to set up such a list and generate a data base for contacting mitochondrial organizations world-wide to build up MitoGlobal.

Prof. Masashi Tanaka, former president of the Asian Society for Mitochondrial Research and Medicine (ASMRM) and founding member of the Japanese Society of Mitochondrial Research and Medicine (J-mit), was co-opted into the executive MiPboard as a representative of ASMRM including J-mit. He reported on plans to organize the First World Mitochondrial Congress (WMC), 2013 Nov 6-8, in Tokyo, Japan (Chair Prof. Nobutaka Hattori, Juntendo University; discoverer of PARKIN): 300 participants are expected. The MiPboard will co-organize a MiPsymposium at the WMC and propose 4-5 speakers.

The MiPboard agreed on the importance of establishing mtGlobal and will contribute to its establishment as a world-wide umbrella organisation.

MitoGlobal was discussed at the UMDF Mitochondrial Medicine Meeting, Washington US (Jun 2012)

An informal discussion on the concept of MitoGlobal was held at the UMDF Meeting 'Mitochondrial Medicine 2012' (Bethesda, USA). Participants (in alphabetical order):

  • Erich Gnaiger (MiP, Austria)
  • Yasutoshi Koga (J-Mit and ASMRM, Japan)
  • Charles Mohan (UMDF, USA)
  • Keshav Singh (MRS and Editor Mitochondrion, USA)
  • Masashi Tanaka (J-Mit and ASMRM, Japan)
  • Dan Wright (UMDF, USA)

We briefly referred to the discussion in 2011 on an international mitochondrial organization (Kagoshima), and reviewed the summary provided below. MitoGlobal will be a scientific organization which will seek direct contacts and strong links to mitochondrial patient organizations. An international mitochondrial patient organization has been formed: IMP.

MitGlobal was discussed at MiP2011, Bordeaux FR (Sep 2011)

Erich Gnaiger, Chairman, MiPsociety - [email protected]

MitoGlobal was discussed at ASMRM and J-Mit, Kagoshima JP (Sep 2011)

As a result of discussions in Kagoshima, ASMRM and J-Mit take the lead to organize the

  • First World Mitochondrial Congress (WMC), 2013 Nov 6-8, in Tokyo, Japan (Chair Prof. Nobutaka Hattori, Juntendo University).

ASMRM represents a model organization in Asia for the world-wide initiative aimed at by MitoGlobal. Such an association of societies, comparable to UMDF for the US, does not exist in Europe. The ASMRM conference 2012 will provide an opportunity to jointly discuss further steps in organizing mtGlobal and planning the World Mitochondrial Congress 2013:

An example for the need of tight coordination of mitochondrial societies is given by the overlapping dates of the annual mitochondrial meeting in India (2012 Nov 3-5) and ASMRM in Beijing. The discussion on a final name for the international mitochondrial organization is kept open.

  • Erich Gnaiger (2011-08-30): To Prof. Hideyuki J Majima, Kagoshima: Yesterday .. I summarized some of the topics we discussed during the special welcome dinner. I think our project on a mitochondrial society network might be very important. As a working title, I suggest ‘International Union of Pure and Applied Mitochondrial Research and Medicine’ IUPAM. ... It would be great if this topic could be discussed at the general meetings of J-mit and ASMRM at the Kagoshima Conference, and I might therefore forward this suggestion to Dr. Masashi Tanaka and Dr. Yau-Huei Wei. I will bring up the same topic at the general meeting of the Mitochondrial Physiology Society, in Bordeaux, FR, at the beginning of September (with the suggestion to extend the discussion to the French Society: Association contre les maladies mitochondriales). Depending on the feedback from the meetings in Kagoshima and Bordeaux, the circulation would then be extended to the mitochondrial societies in the US (UMDF, Mitochondrial Research Soc., Mitochondrial Medicine Soc.), The Society for Mitochondria Research and Medicine, India (SMRM; I will be there in December), and the organizers of the Mito-Conference in Germany. I guess we will reach a critical mass in a short time, which makes me confident that we will have a successful start. The official start could be celebrated at the special 2012 meeting in Austria, the Bioblast 2012, to which representatives of the national mitochondrial societies will be invited.

  • MitoGlobal Companies: Should MitoGlobal generate a list of companies involved in mitochondrial research and medicine?

Comments on MitoGlobal

The name 'International Mitochondrial Union' served as a preliminary term during an initial period of discussion until July 2012. Global Mitochondrial Network received the most positive feedback by comparison with various alternatives:

  • International Mitochondrial Union - IMU
  • International Union of Mitochondrial Research - IUMR
  • International Union of Mitochondrial Research and Medicine - IUMRM
  • International Union of Pure and Applied Mitochondrial Research and Medicine - IUPAM (implicit reference to IUPAB, IUPAC)
  • Propose an alternative name: Keith Garlid suggested the change from 'Global Mitochondrial Network' to 'Mitochondrial Global Network'.
  • worldmitocongress (WMC) proposed by Keshav Singh (2012-07-02)
"Here is the dictionary meaning of congress which really support and reflect the idea we discussed.
congress[n. kong-gris; v. kuhn-gres, kuhng-]   Origin con·gress   /n. ˈkɒŋgrɪs; v. kənˈgrɛs, kəŋ-/ Show Spelled[n. kong-gris; v. kuhn-gres, kuhng-] Show IPA noun
1. a formal meeting or assembly of representatives for the discussion, arrangement, or promotion of some matter of common interest.
2. an association, especially one composed of representatives of various organizations.
  • I like the idea of an international network. A by-product of this network could be a "competence platform", a platform where work groups come up with the core competences of their lab (mostly visible from already existing webpages and publications, perhaps needs to be structured to be easily accessible). Like this, visibility of concentrated mitochondrial competence from the Americas, Europe, Asia, Australia,...) would be apparent and accessible.

Obvious benefits: Visibility of the field with respect to the scientific community; when applying for scientific funding worldwide, partners would be at hand (e.g. within the European Union, partners from non-European countries are mostly welcome); Partners would be chosen based on scientific excellence, which would gradually increase scientific quality in a research environment which has long gone global. This initiative would also be of great value for young investigators to foster exchange of ideas and students (e.g. transfer of ideas via master/PhD students). Dominik Pesta D, US (2012-11-13)

  • Yau-Huei Wei (2011-09-04) Dear Dr. Gnaiger, It's great to meet with you again in Kagoshima, Japan during the Congress last week. I enjoyed very much the scientific activities as well as the social programs of the Congress. The proposal to establish an International Union of Mitochondrial Research and Medicine (IUMRM) is a great idea. My colleagues in Taiwan will fully support this organization. You may want to make an official proposal for each of the member societies to deliberate in their own council meetings. We can have an official establishment of the IUMRM and hold the First IUMRM Congress in Kyoto in 2013.
Yau-Huei Wei - [email protected]
  • Erich Gnaiger (2011-08-31): For our MiPboard meeting: Do you all agree on the present status of MiPlinks? MiPlinks are part of the MiPs identity. (1) I guess, most links are generally agreed upon. But are ISOTT and BTK (BTK changed name) actually MiPlinks? Should the many Free Radical Societies be considered as potential MiPlinks? The Biochemical Society is missing, who thanks to Guy fully supported MiP2007. Where would it stop? (2) To answer one of Guy’s questions (‘It is not so clear what this entity would usefully do'): The task of general Links could be shifted to Mitochondrial_Global_Network, taking care of such links as one of its (many) specific tasks. No single mito-initiative looks yet at networking from a modern global perspective – including the interesting initiative considered by Rodrigue (where do we find information on this new network or on the many other emerging mito-initiatives?). Is MiPs different – is it really ‘international’? When organizing the next MiPconference, should we accept that we are mainly European, with some North and South American influence? Or should we extend our links actively to Asia with invited speakers particularly from India, Japan, China, Korea (add the countries with your personal connections). An ‘International Union’ might bring us on the right track – science without borders (see Bioblast Conference). It will be great to discuss these topics at MiP2011 in Bordeaux, and please help in advance to transfer the spirit of our focussed 10+5 min schedule to the MiPboard (not MiPbored) lunch meeting.
Erich - [email protected]
  • Steven Hand (2011-08-31): The concept sounds reasonable to me – something that should be discussed in Bordeaux at our board meeting at least.
Steve - [email protected]
  • Vilma Borutaite (2011-09-02): Networking sounds good. It would be good to discuss this more in Bordeaux.
Vilma - [email protected]
  • Kathrin Renner-Sattler (2011-08-31): I included it in the Agenda.
Kathi - [email protected]
  • Guy Brown (2011-08-31): Sounds great to me. It is not so clear what this entity would usefully do. And the name International Union of Pure and Applied Mitochondrial Research and Medicine (IUPAM) is crap. But otherwise good idea: Let mitochondria rule the world!
Guy - [email protected]
  • Rodrigue Rossignol (2011-08-31): There exists a new International group that federates a large number of associations of patients with Mitochondrial diseases, and I'm involved in it's organization: AMMi (FR), AEPMi (ES), BOKS BE), DGM (DE), MDC (GB), Mitocon (IT), UMDF (US), VKS (NL), VSN (NL). You could contact the leader of IMP, Elja van der Veer ([email protected]), to propose your idea of networking Science societies with Patient's. That's a need in my opinion to advance in the same direction. So let's discuss that topic in Bordeaux and we could invite Elja to Austria then!
Rodrigue - [email protected]
  • Hong Kyu Lee (2011-08-31): I always supported such idea. We need an international organization, just to organize the meetings and disseminate the informations and ideas. Too important topic to be ignored.
Hong Kyu - [email protected]
