• MiPboard Meeting at MiP2011 (2011-09-07) There was little time to discuss the Mitochondrial Global Network in detail. The name of the 'mitochondrial union' should be short and concise. The consensus was to further elaborate the idea of an international union, which will be encouraged by the Mitochondrial Physiology Society.

• Yau-Huei Wei (2011-09-04) Dear Dr. Gnaiger, It's great to meet with you again in Kagoshima, Japan during the Congress last week. I enjoyed very much the scientific activities as well as the social programs of the Congress. The proposal to establish an International Union of Mitochondrial Research and Medicine (IUMRM) is a great idea. My colleagues in Taiwan will fully support this organization. You may want to make an official proposal for each of the member societies to deliberate in their own council meetings. We can have an official establishment of the IUMRM and hold the First IUMRM Congress in Kyoto in 2013.

• Erich Gnaiger (2011-08-31): For our MiPboard meeting: Do you all agree on the present status of MiPlinks? MiPlinks are part of the MiPs identity. (1) I guess, most links are generally agreed upon. But are ISOTT and BTK (BTK changed name) actually MiPlinks? Should the many Free Radical Societies be considered as potential MiPlinks? The Biochemical Society is missing, who thanks to Guy fully supported MiP2007. Where would it stop? (2) To answer one of Guy’s questions (‘It is not so clear what this entity would usefully do'): The task of general Links could be shifted to Global Mitochondrial Network, taking care of such links as one of its (many) specific tasks. No single mito-initiative looks yet at networking from a modern global perspective – including the interesting initiative considered by Rodrigue (where do we find information on this new network or on the many other emerging mito-initiatives?). Is MiPs different – is it really ‘international’? When organizing the next MiPconference, should we accept that we are mainly European, with some North and South American influence? Or should we extend our links actively to Asia with invited speakers particularly from India, Japan, China, Korea (add the countries with your personal connections). An ‘International Union’ might bring us on the right track – science without borders (see Bioblast Conference). It will be great to discuss these topics at MiP2011 in Bordeaux, and please help in advance to transfer the spirit of our focussed 10+5 min schedule to the MiPboard (not MiPbored) lunch meeting.

• Guy Brown (2011-08-31): Sounds great to me. It is not so clear what this entity would usefully do. And the name International Union of Pure and Applied Mitochondrial Research and Medicine (IUPAM) is crap. But otherwise good idea: Let mitochondria rule the world!

• Rodrigue Rossignol (2011-08-31): There exists a new International group that federates a large number of associations of patients with Mitochondrial diseases, and I'm involved in it's organization: AMMi (FR), AEPMi (ES), BOKS BE), DGM (DE), MDC (GB), Mitocon (IT), UMDF (US), VKS (NL), VSN (NL). You could contact the leader of IMP, Elja van der Veer ([email protected]), to propose your idea of networking Science societies with Patient's. That's a need in my opinion to advance in the same direction. So let's discuss that topic in Bordeaux and we could invite Elja to Austria then!

• Hong Kyu Lee (2011-08-31): I always supported such idea. We need an international organization, just to organize the meetings and disseminate the informations and ideas. Too important topic to be ignored.

• Erich Gnaiger (2011-08-30): To Prof. Hideyuki J Majima, Kagoshima: Yesterday .. I summarized some of the topics we discussed during the special welcome dinner. I think our project on a mitochondrial society network might be very important. As a working title, I suggest ‘International Union of Pure and Applied Mitochondrial Research and Medicine’ IUPAM. A summary of the present suggestions can be found at IUPAM. It would be great if this topic could be discussed at the general meetings of J-mit and ASMRM at the Kagoshima Conference, and I might therefore forward this suggestion to Dr. Masashi Tanaka and Dr. Yau-Huei Wei. I will bring up the same topic at the general meeting of the Mitochondrial Physiology Society, in Bordeaux, FR, at the beginning of September (with the suggestion to extend the discussion to the Frech Society: Association contre les maladies mitochondriales). Depending on the feedback from the meetings in Kagoshima and Bordeaux, the circulation would then be extended to the mitochondrial societies in the US (UMDF, Mitochondrial Research Soc., Mitochondrial Medicine Soc.), The Society for Mitochondria Research and Medicine, India (SMRM; I will be there in December), and the organizers of the Mito-Conference in Germany. I guess we will reach a critical mass in a short time, which makes me confident that we will have a successful start. The official start could be celebrated at the special 2012 meeting in Austria, the Bioblast 2012, to which representatives of the national mitochondrial societies will be invited.

Further comments

• I like the idea of an international network. A by-product of this network could be a "competence platform", a platform where work groups come up with the core competences of their lab (mostly visible from already existing webpages and publications, perhaps needs to be structured to be easily accessible). Like this, visibility of concentrated mitochondrial competence from the Americas, Europe, Asia, Australia,...) would be apparent and accessible.

Obvious benefits: Visibility of the field with respect to the scientific community; when applying for scientific funding worldwide, partners would be at hand (e.g. within the European Union, partners from non-European countries are mostly welcome); Partners would be chosen based on scientific excellence, which would gradually increase scientific quality in a research environment which has long gone global. This initiative would also be of great value for young investigators to foster exchange of ideas and students (e.g. transfer of ideas via master/PhD students). Dominik Pesta D, US (2012-11-13)

The name 'International Mitochondrial Union' served as a preliminary term during an initial period of discussion until July 2012. Global Mitochondrial Network received the most positive feedback by comparison with various alternatives:
